About Walkerston
Walkerston sits on the Peak Downs Highway south-west of Mackay and is bounded by the Pioneer River to the north. Bakers Creek also runs through the locality.
The locality had a population of 3,615 at the 2021 Census, up from 3,402 in 2016. Its history includes the earlier names Scrubby Creek and Baker Creek before Walkerston became the established town name.
One of the area’s best-known landmarks is Greenmount Homestead, a heritage property associated with early European history of the district. Walkerston also has strong community and sporting connections, including McLeannan Park and local cycling and BMX faclites.
